Legislative Updates: Week of January 22, 2024
 

After a week-long closure due to winter weather, the Tennessee State Legislature resumed its session on Monday, January 22, 2024. Here are upcoming dates of importance: 

Wednesday, January 31st - House bill filing deadline

Thursday, February 1st - Senate bill filing deadline 

Monday, February 5th  - State of the State address

Gov. Lee to Deliver Sixth State of the State Address on February 5
 

Governor Bill Lee will deliver his sixth State of the State address to the General Assembly and Tennesseans on Monday, February 5, at 6 p.m. CST in the House Chamber of the Tennessee State Capitol. 

“Tennessee is continuing to lead the nation as a beacon of opportunity, security and freedom,” said Gov. Lee. “Every Tennessean has an important role to play as we strengthen and secure our state’s future, and in the coming year, I look forward to working with the General Assembly to accomplish our legislative priorities and make life better for all.”

The address can be found on Lee’s Facebook and YouTube channels and will be aired statewide.

Pushback on Overhauling Tennessee's Franchise Tax

Slayton Named Tennessee State Forester

Heather Slayton has made history as the first woman to be named state forester in Tennessee. Appointed by Governor Bill Lee and Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher, Slayton succeeds David Arnold, who served for 33 years, five of which were in the top forestry position. Slayton, who joined the department in 2012 and was named assistant forester in 2018, brings a wealth of experience to this important role. Congratulations to Heather on this historic achievement!

Tennessee Educator Missy Testerman Finalist for 2024 National Teacher of the Year


Missy Testerman, ESL program director at Rogersville City School, has been selected as one of four finalists for the 2024 National Teacher of the Year Award. This recognition comes after Missy was named the 2023-24 Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Her dedication to education and her community, spanning 31 years, has earned her a place among the nation's top educators.
Follow her journey as she represents Tennessee in this prestigious competition.

Proposal to Allow Death Penalty for Child Rapists Moves Forward
 

Lawmakers have voted to advance a bill that would permit the death penalty as a punishment for child rape, aggravated child rape, or especially aggravated child rape. Sponsored by Rep. William Lamberth (R-Portland), this bill aims to address heinous crimes against children. While it advances in the legislative process, some lawmakers express concerns and advocate for life imprisonment instead. This proposal is sparking important discussions within the legislature.
